Red Joan

Red Joan (2018) is a British spy drama based on a novel of the same name written by Jennie Rooney which was itself inspired by the life of Melita Norwood, the longest serving British KGB spy.

Melita Norwood worked at the British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association as a secretary and supplied the Soviet Union with nuclear secrets. The materials that Norwood betrayed to the USSR hastened the pace at which the Soviets developed nuclear bomb technology.

The film was directed by Trevor Nunn, and stars Sophie CooksonStephen Campbell MooreTom HughesBen MilesNina SosanyaTereza Srbova and Judi Dench.

The young Joan Stanley (the movie version of the aforementioned Ms. Norwood) studied physics at Cambridge where she became involved with Communists and radical politics through her friend Sonya and her brother, Leo, a German Jew. Her story which reaches as far back as 1938 is recalled in flashbacks as Joan in old age is questioned by the Special Branch. The questioning reveals that Joan was more concerned about levelling the playing field between the super powers, so that no one had an advantage, rather than communism itself. She believed her actions saved lives.

As usual you can get your tickets £6 from the Harting Stores but we do accept payment at the door.

Doors will open at 7.00 with the film beginning at 7.30. There will be an interval when ice creams can be purchased. There will also be a bar serving wine, beers & soft drinks.

Please come along and enjoy this village social. All profits will go to running the village hall.
